Frequently Asked Questions
Why should I pursue counseling?
People need someone objective and caring to talk to. You could seek counseling for help with life issues you’re having trouble resolving on your own. Some things people work on with a counselor are: self-criticism, anxiety, anger, relationship difficulties, depression, grief, trauma, physical pain, insomnia, and dependence (or addiction) on chemicals, alcohol, sex, shopping, gambling, etc.
What happens in a counseling session?
That depends on the individual client. Some people enjoy active work and do dramatic enactments of their issues. Others prefer to simply talk about how they feel. Some people draw pictures of their experience or write poems, and still others may combine all of these in one day.
What you choose to do is based on your desires and comfort levels. I work hard to meet you where you are, and to create a non-threatening, judgment-free environment that is comfortable and engaging for you.
How long does it take?
It depends on the issues you are working on and the goals you set for yourself. Most people come once a week, and some come twice weekly. Some people focus on immediate or pressing issues for a short period of time (6-12 sessions). Others choose longer-term counseling (12 or more sessions) if they have a long standing issue they want to explore in greater depth. Either is fine, and you don’t have to choose right away.
What do you mean by “Art Therapy?”
Art Therapy brings the various different arts together to deepen a persons experience. Each different type of art is powerful on its own, and they are even more so together! Visual arts, like drawing, painting, and collage, can be combined with dance, drama, writing, and music. Any combination is possible. The idea is that every different experience you have of a situation or issue gives you a broader perspective about it.

Do I have to do art in my session?
Not at all. Not everyone wants to make art, and that’s fine with me. If this sounds like you, we would probably pursue counseling based on talking. I truly believe everyone has some creative talent, but I realize that some people’s art lies in their cooking. Or how they take care of their family. You don’t have to paint to be artistic.
Many people come to me because of my training in the arts. I believe this work has made me more accepting of all people and their situations, whether they "do" art or not.
Do I have to be an “artist” to use art?
No. In this setting the arts are used to explore internal issues and look at the world from a different viewpoint, not in an attempt to create museum quality material. No drawing ability is required to make angry marks on paper. Nor is it needed to draw a happy face. No musical knowledge is needed to beat a drum in time with your heart. No acting experience is necessary to practice new behaviors and become your truest self, stepping out of your problematic patterns and roles.
In our sessions art is a tool of expression. We can use it together to help you understand yourself in new and satisfying ways.
What is Psychodrama?
Psychodrama, also called Drama Therapy, is a powerful method of connecting to the key elements of an issue through dramatic enactment. It can help you safely explore difficult and unexpressed feelings, gain insight, practice new behaviors and gain a deeper awareness and understanding of others.

What is Sandplay?

In Sandplay you arrange objects in a small sandbox. There are dozens of items to choose from, including miniature animals and people, items from nature, and more. The created scene often reflects events and situations in your inner and outer worlds. Like a drawing or a poem, it can lead to personal insight when explored and examined.
What is Depth Hypnosis?
Depth Hypnosis is a valuable resource for controlling anxiety, managing pain, changing behavior, and deep personal inquiry. Contrary to popular belief, hypnotherapy does not make you quack like a duck or lose control of your body. In fact, you are in complete control during every phase of a hypnotherapy session.
What is Shamanic Counseling?
Modern Shamanic Counseling employs age-old principles to increase your connection to your spiritual self. It is a positive non-denominational approach to recharging your belief in yourself and your ability to be your best person through connection to the natural world. Ancient shamanic practices are seen by many as the basis for much of the work of Carl Jung, one of the founders of what is now modern psychology.
Do I have to do Psychodrama / Sandplay / Hypnotherapy / Shamanic Counseling?
Of course not. While they are all useful tools, it is more important that you are comfortable and feel that your needs are respected than it is to use every method available. I am committed to finding the approaches that best suit your needs.
Do you accept insurance?
I do not work directly with insurance at this time. I am, however, an out-of-network provider. I can give you the necessary paperwork (a "superbill") to bill your insurance on your own. Check with your insurance carrier to verify coverage.
